Growing up on an island
I was born and raised in Kamijima, Ehime: a town of about 6,000 people spread over seven inhabited and eighteen uninhabited islands in the Seto Inland Sea. At night there is almost no light, and dark water lies between the islands.
On a small island, counting what you do not have gets you nowhere. You ask what you can make with what is at hand. That habit carries into my work today.
What I draw
An AI runs straight down the slope of the landscape in front of it toward an answer. But the landscape shifts as it is used, so the answer it reaches is not always the same. A human’s thinking takes detours and now and then stumbles. I draw the two chained together on a single sheet of paper, in nothing but points.
I write the first equation myself. However long I talk things through with an AI, the idea at the root of the form is mine to decide. That is the rule of my practice.
Outside the work
I am a fan of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, and I help run “Minna no Osou-jima”, a beach clean-up project in Kamijima.
In the autumn of 2025 I took my first flight, and my first trip abroad, to Singapore. The photo on this page was taken then.
